HCL Technologies to Set Up IBM Power Architecture Design Center

According to a statement by the Indian company HCL Technologies, it has signed an agreement with IBM whereby it will establish a design center for IBM's Power Architecture chips, making it the first company outside of IBM to work on these chips. Specifically, HCL Technologies has been given the right to use and sub-license IBM's PowerPC and PowerPC 440 embedded microprocessor cores, for which it will pay licensing fees. The design center will be based in the Indian city of Chennai, and it will try to expand the use of Power Architecture chips to areas such as wireless communications and consumer electronics devices.
